How To Change Your Direction: Attitude Hacks to Navigate Life's Challenges

The one choice that we all have every single moment of every single day is our attitude. Naturally, I have always been a realistically optimistic type of person. But there have been times when my attitude was bad. I was going through a divorce 18 years ago and the attitude that I had towards my boys’ dad was not great for quite some time.

When I decided to shift my attitude to focus on the love that I have for him, because of the love that I have for my boys and the love that I have for myself, when I decided to see him as their dad, everything changed for me. Everything changed in our relationship going forward.

Yes, we are divorced, but we're okay. We're great parents. Our boys love me. They love Dad and my attitude shift at that time changed the trajectory of our relationship going forward.

I can remember specifically when my attitude shifted towards the boys’ dad. We were just about to sign our agreement and our parenting plan, and I rushed out of the lawyer's office. I stumbled down the stairs. I rushed to my car. It was one of the hardest moments of my life. I wasn't happy about not being a part of my boys' lives every single day and every single moment. I had to give up time. So I was angry about that. And I was angry at their dad. I was sitting in the car and I realized that Dad was just as important in their lives as I was. I realized that they needed him in their lives as much as they needed me. So I decided to shift my attitude.

At that moment, I decided to walk back up the stairs and sign the agreement. 50/50, boys would spend half their time with their dad and half their time with me, their mom. And that shift in attitude changed everything. And today, 18 years later, the boys have a great relationship with me. They have a great relationship with their dad. Hopefully, they're going to grow up, meet the love of their lives, get married and they're going to have great relationships with their wives and their families. And maybe I played a small part in that.
